OVERVIEW
Herpes zoster is a debilitating illness that can lead to complications, one of which, postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), may last for years. Due to the fact that herpes zoster and PHN are so difficult to treat, the most effective means of reducing the burden of herpes zoster is through vaccination. In this monograph, 3 cases involving the herpes zoster vaccine will be presented. Issues surrounding vaccination in the context of immunosuppressive therapy will be discussed, as well as issues involving coadministration with other vaccines, and the risk of transmission of the virus strain used in the zoster vaccine. Barriers to optimal zoster immunization rates and strategies to help improve herpes zoster immunization rates will also be described, and treatment strategies will be reviewed.
